If you run e-commerce for a brand or its agency, your Q4 plan was probably set before 16 September 2026. That day Google published a set of holiday updates that touch three parts of the plan at once: where a product gets explained, where the order gets finished, and how you measure being recommended by an AI answer. Most of it rewards work on the product feed and the checkout that you can still do before peak trading.
What Google announced
The post, by Ashish Gupta, VP and GM of Merchant Shopping, groups these changes under agentic commerce.
| Update | What it does | Where and when |
|---|---|---|
| Business Agent for YouTube ads | Viewers can ask product questions and get tailored guidance inside the ad, without leaving YouTube | A beta for eligible US retailers, who sign up through Google's interest form |
| Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) integration hub | Merchants who use the hub for UCP-powered checkout can also enable cart transfer to a merchant site and enhanced checkout flow testing; Google says analytics and more are coming soon | Rolling out gradually in the US, with Australia and Canada to follow early next year |
| AI performance insights in Merchant Center | Shows a brand's share of voice against other brands on surfaces like AI Mode and AI Overviews | Generally available for English-language queries in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand and the US |
| New feed attributes | A video link attribute that powers visual, shoppable ad formats, and conversational attributes that add richer context to listings | Submitted with your product data in Merchant Center |
| Loyalty data | Connecting it in Merchant Center highlights member perks and pricing across Google | Google's example: members of Minted's loyalty program, Minted More, who search for holiday cards see tailored results with member pricing |
Two numbers came with it. Google says merchants adopting core Merchant Center feed best practices see, on average, a 5% increase in conversions the following month, and that during its testing with lululemon, conversational attributes submitted by the brand were incorporated 50% of the time in relevant product recommendations in AI Mode. Neither has been independently verified and the post gives no method, so treat them as Google's reason for asking, not a forecast for your account.
The feed is now the brief
An AI answer that recommends a product has to describe it in words, and it can only use the words it has. In a conversational answer, the system needs to know who the product suits, what it pairs with and which variant answers the question. That context comes from the feed. This is the product-level version of generative engine optimization: the same discipline of being quotable, applied to catalogue data instead of articles.
- Fix the basics first: titles, descriptions, identifiers, prices and availability that match the landing page.
- Add conversational attributes where they carry real information. Google's help centre lists six: question_and_answer, document_link, related_product, item_group_title, variant_option and popularity_rank. They are optional and do not affect approval status.
- Write question_and_answer pairs from the questions your service team answers every week about sizing, compatibility, materials or delivery. Google's help page says you don't need to duplicate details you already submit in the description, product highlight or product detail attributes.
- Submit the new attributes through a supplemental data source, as Google recommends, so they can be edited without touching the primary feed.
- Add video links where you have honest demonstration footage. Google says the video link attribute powers shoppable ad formats; our advice is that a clip of the product in use will do more work there than a brand film.
Checkout readiness for transferred carts
UCP is an open-source standard that Google's developer guide describes as co-designed with industry leaders. The guide describes native checkout integrated with AI Mode in Google Search and Gemini, and states that the merchant remains the Merchant of Record and keeps its customer data and relationships. Google also says UCP already enables direct checkout for hundreds of thousands of brands and retailers across Google. Cart transfer points the other way: Google's help page lists cart transfer to a merchant site as a capability merchants can select in the hub, so the purchase can finish on your own site.
That suits brands that want the customer relationship, and it moves the risk onto your e-commerce checkout. A shopper who arrives with a cart built elsewhere has already decided. An empty basket, a changed price or a variant the site does not recognise loses a sale that was nearly done. The checkout work that helps agents that browse client sites applies here too, but the test is narrower: does a cart that arrives from outside survive the journey? Google has not published how a transferred cart carries prices, variants or promotions, so the checks below are our reading of the risk, not Google's requirements.
- Confirm that product and variant identifiers and prices in the feed match the site exactly.
- Decide what happens when an item has sold out or its price has moved between the AI answer and your checkout, and show the shopper the change clearly instead of failing silently.
- Keep guest checkout; a shopper handed over from an AI answer has no reason to create an account first.
- Check that promotions and loyalty prices apply to a transferred cart the same way they apply to one built on your site.
- If Google selects you for the hub, use its sandbox to validate cart transfer before peak traffic, not during it, and check how your analytics records these sessions. Google says hub analytics are coming soon, so for now rely on your own tagging.
What to measure in the AI performance report
Google now reports share of voice in AI answers inside Merchant Center, in an AI performance tab under Analytics and Products. According to Google's help page, it shows your share of voice against competitors, the competitors' average share, how popular search types, terms, intents and attributes have been, and how many of your products appear for top terms, popular attributes and search intents.
Read the limits before reporting the numbers. The data covers organic AI traffic from free listings, not ads. It covers English-language queries only. It updates daily with a lag of a few days. The comparison is against the competitors Merchant Center has defined for your account: Google's help page says you can't change them, and an account with no defined competitors shows a 100% share of voice. Like Search Console's AI Overviews report, it measures being shown, not being clicked or bought.
- Record a baseline now, before holiday demand distorts it, and date every feed change so later movement can be tied to a cause.
- Check which competitors Merchant Center has set for you before reading the share figures. You can't choose them, so judge whether they are the brands a shopper actually compares you with, and read the numbers with that in mind.
- Read the frequency and attribute data as a to-do list: an attribute shoppers search on that your products lack is a feed fix.
- Report share of voice next to sales, never instead of them.
What is US-only, and what that means elsewhere
The YouTube Business Agent beta is for US retailers. The UCP updates are rolling out gradually in the US, with Australia and Canada early next year. The AI performance report covers five markets. Neither Google's post nor its help page names the UK or any EU country.
For a brand selling from Cyprus or the UK, that changes the order of the work, not the work itself. Feed quality is not regional: cleaner product data and conversational attributes serve any surface that reads the feed, and Google's help page on those attributes names no country restriction. What waits is the measurement. If the brand also runs a Merchant Center account in one of the five covered markets, use the report there as an early read on how its data compares.
