YouTube's September Updates for Advertisers: What Is Live, What Is Coming, What to Test in Q4

Google's Demand Gen Drop and Made on YouTube added one-tap Shorts and Gmail image ads, Business Agent in YouTube ads, Maps pins, creator affiliate expansion and three-cut A/B tests. What is live, what is a sign-up, and what to test in Q4.

Two YouTube announcements landed a day apart in late September, and they are easy to read as one. On 23 September, Made on YouTube brought creator tools, a bigger shopping affiliate programme and video A/B testing. On 24 September, Google's Demand Gen Drop added a conversational agent to YouTube ads, one-tap image ads on Shorts and Gmail, and promoted pins on Google Maps. Some of this can go into a campaign today. Some of it is a sign-up form. Some of it is a promise with no date. Planning Q4 around the wrong category wastes the weeks that matter most.

What is live, what needs a sign-up, and what is still coming

The table sorts each feature by the wording Google and YouTube used themselves. Where the wording is vague, the table says so rather than guessing.

The Demand Gen changes

One-tap image ads on Shorts and Gmail

This is the most immediately usable change. A single tap on an image ad in Shorts or Gmail now opens the landing page. On Shorts, Google ties it to 9:16 full-bleed image ads. An account whose Demand Gen image set holds only square and landscape crops will not get the one-tap experience on Shorts until it adds vertical images.

For Gmail, Google says advertisers adding Gmail to Demand Gen campaigns "on average see their image creatives achieve a 40% increase in conversions at the same ROI", citing its own internal global data from February 2026. It is a vendor figure about the vendor's inventory, and the post gives no sample or method. Treat it as a reason to test Gmail, not as a forecast.

Business Agent for YouTube Ads

Business Agent puts a conversational assistant alongside video ads that carry product feeds, so a viewer can ask about a product or brand without leaving the video. Google's product page says advertisers do not need to write chat scripts or change creative, because answers are "grounded in your existing product catalog and website data". That makes the feed and the site the whole brief. Out-of-date prices, thin product descriptions or unclear returns policies become the agent's answers.

Access is by sign-up. Neither Google's announcement nor its product page states which countries, languages, budgets or placements qualify, so we are not listing any. If you apply, record the terms the form shows you rather than relying on second-hand summaries.

Affiliate location extensions let retail networks and dealerships show promoted pins across Google Maps "as people browse, search, and navigate". This suits brands sold through third-party stores, such as a manufacturer whose products sit in electronics chains. Google gave no availability detail in the post, so confirm eligibility in your account before planning around it.

The creator side: partnerships, affiliate and testing

YouTube Creator Partnerships is "now available in 20 countries". Once a creator posts a brand partnership, they can share access with a one-click code, letting the brand see the video's performance and put paid media behind it with creator partnerships boost. For a brand, that shortens the step between a sponsored video that works and paid reach behind it. PPC Land notes that YouTube's Help Center listed 24 countries and regions in July, and that neither figure comes with a list, so check your market directly.

The Shopping affiliate programme is set to reach 35 countries by the end of 2026. YouTube is also introducing affiliate campaigns, which let retailers and brands offer creators exclusive commission rates or bonuses for content featuring specific products. Product tags will show viewers a localised link, so creators with international audiences can earn on cross-border sales.

Video A/B testing lets a creator try up to three cuts of a video to see which holds audience attention best. PPC Land reads YouTube's own "helps you select" wording as leaving the final choice with the creator, and found no eligibility criteria, markets or release date in any of the material it reviewed. For brands, whether it reaches sponsored videos is open: PPC Land found nothing saying whether a video declared as paid promotion can be entered into a cut test.

Where the UK, EU and Gulf stand

The UK is the clearest case. PPC Land reports that it became the affiliate programme's 15th market on 6 August 2026, and that Creator Partnerships was available there from March. Neither YouTube post lists the countries the affiliate expansion will add, or the 20 countries where Creator Partnerships runs, so there is no confirmation yet for Cyprus, Greece or the Gulf. Amazon tagging is live only in the US, with India and Brazil next. For Demand Gen, the one-tap change carries no stated country limits, while Business Agent and the Maps pins give no country information at all.

What to test in Q4

  1. Build 9:16 full-bleed image assets for every Demand Gen campaign that runs on Shorts, and compare them against your current image set on landing-page visits and conversions.
  2. Add Gmail as a channel in one Demand Gen campaign, with a holdout or a matched comparison campaign, so you judge Google's claim on your own sales data.
  3. Audit the Merchant Center feed and the policy pages on your site before applying for Business Agent. Anything the agent could quote should be accurate.
  4. If you sell through retail chains or dealers, ask your Google contact whether affiliate location extensions are available in your markets.
  5. Ask creators you already work with for the one-click code on existing partnership videos, and review their performance before deciding what to boost.
  6. If you run a brand channel, try the three-cut test on your next hero video once it appears in your Studio.

We covered the US beta of Business Agent in our pre-Q4 checklist for e-commerce brands. For testing the Gmail claim without relying on Google's own reporting, the method in our guide to running a first geo-lift test applies directly.
